Eric Navet, World Champion Show Jumping Team Event in 2OO2 and Vice World Champion Individual Event, gives us his opinion.

Why is a good ground so important for a show jumping horse’s career?

Due to the physical efforts that are required of a show jumping horse, the longevity of its career depends on the grounds on which it has been trained

throughout its life and on which it has competed. I would even say that the younger a horse is trained on a quality ground the greater its chance to have a long career.

What psychological benefit does the horse gain from using a good ground?
The positive psychological benefit for the horse is huge. It is linked to its physical comfort, as the horse must not feel any pain or difficulty if it is to fully participate during training sessions and when competing. With a good ground, the horse will behave better and be more concentrated on the fence.

What do you gain by competing on a quality ground?
There is a 100% gain, as obviously a horse that jumps on an inadequate ground will hurt itself and suffer. If the horse suffers, it will be afraid and as a result will hold itself back when jumping, which will result in faults. A horse which withholds itself will inevitably not be a top performer.

What elements go into making a good show jumping ground?
These elements are difficult to find naturally but they can be created. This is why Toubin & Clement have had so much success by developing a ground that is good for take off, that provides spring and is at the same time comfortable upon landing.

What kind of ground is suitable for an outside arena ?
For an outdoor arena, a Toubin & Clement QUALI-SOL ground (Type 2), is a firm ground that offers a great take off, lots of spring and grip for the bends, while remaining comfortable.

What kind of ground is suitable for an inside arena?
For an indoor arena, I recommend a Toubin & Clement fibre ground: a PRO-SOL (Type 3), that provides additional daily comfort, needs little watering and is used in many indoor competitions.

What needs to be done to maintain Toubin & Clement grounds?
Whether it is an outdoor or indoor arena, I recommend that the ground is levelled out every evening. For an outdoor arena the advantage is that even if it rains all night, the rain will fall on a smooth surface and the water will run away, leaving a perfect ground in the morning.

How often do Toubin & Clement grounds need to be watered?
One of the advantages of the PRO-SOL for indoor arenas is that it requires very little watering. I water it every three weeks or so. For the QUALI-SOL ground, I water it on a regular basis without soaking it.
